Serve the People

I just finished reading a really great memoir,  Serve the People by Jen Lin-Liu.

It was really a delightful read.  I found it in the cook book section of the library, but it was more a personal memoir--focused on cooking.  I love learning about cultures and history and geography and all that--and I think food is such a fabulous medium to explore those things.  Lin-Liu did a great job at it.  Complete with recipes, for the ambitious.  If I were still in Boston (where I had ingredients, oh, and time) I might be ambitious.  But for now, I just enjoyed the read.  Since my years at Northeastern with my Chinese students, I'm even more fascinated by their changing culture.

The other thing about the book is that it "spoke" to me and reminded me that this is the type of book I'd like to write.  Non-fiction, exploring my life as well as other cultures, food, stories, people.  I really need to develop my writing skills.

I was inspired on multiple levels.  Happy read.
