Since it was the first day of a new year, I thought I'd try out some firsts today.
So, I went to the ER for the very first time.
[Okay, not technically true. I went to the ER when I was 2 years old to get my head sewn up after running into a brick wall during nursery. But I didn't take myself there and I don't remember much of it. So I'm counting this.]
At both the walk-in clinic, where I started, and the hospital I didn't know where to go because I'd never been before. As I told the doctor at the clinic--I know where to deliver the flowers. Because that's my connection to hospitals. :)
It was okay. The doctors did the same thing I'd done to myself last night. But hey, now I know what's wrong, know I did the right thing, and have a follow-up appointment to make sure it all heals right.
The IV was completely unnecessary (as I told the guy before he put it in). The nap while I waited was less comfortable than my bed, but was still nice. All in all kind of silly (remind me of the word "silly" when I get a bill and am just plain angry). (It really could have been taken care of at the clinic for a whole, whole lot less money and hassle.)
BUT I decide while I lay there that I was grateful for the experience. Because it was experience. Now I know where the ER is. I know where to go and what to do and expect when I go in. I have had the experience of being in a hospital. If I ever need to go to the ER for a real emergency, I will be much better prepared and able to cope with it. And that's worth something.
This was not the first big first of the day, by the way. The other is more exciting. Stay tuned for that...

Cliff...hanger. Why were you there?? What did you do silly Ruth?
Oh, not supposed to be a cliff hanger. I just don't feel like sharing the details on the internet. (And you don't really want to know the details.) The brief version is, I had an abscess that needed to drain properly. I happen to love puss and draining puss/blood/related stuff so I had done an excellent job on this before the doctors helped it out some more.
