Recently I had a conversation about how rote memorization plays an important role in building knowledge; there are some things we need to just have memorized and available to pop out so that we can gain comprehensive knowledge around it. Example that we discussed was the multiplication tables. I thought about that again this morning. The "9s" are not a particularly common factor, but important for the following: they help me know how many more snoozes I can hit before I have to wake up. I realized this when I was awake, a little over an hour after my usual time (about 72 minutes, to be exact). I realized it when I was thinking about the dreams I had had inbetween those snooze hittings; I really was soundly asleep. And yet, I remember distinctly 18 minutes or 27--either way I'll be okay. Good ole memorization and its amazing facility to help us!
Another thing that requires memorization is studying a lot of laws for the bar exam. And apparently I got that down too, because I just found out (on the 9th of October) that I passed it.
