Creations: History Article

For the past 3 1/2 years I have been on the history committee of the J. Reuben Clark Law Society (a random piece of trivia that I bet none of you knew).  It involves a few conference calls, some writing, editing, etc.  It's been a great experience, as I have learned about the creation and growth of this amazing society for LDS (and other believing) attorneys.  Of particular note, as I have worked on editing interviews and writing articles (one of which became part of the current president's speech at the annual conference!), I have received again and again the strongest witness from the Spirit that the society is inspired of God and is important in His work to bring forth the kingdom of God.  It sometimes seems a little odd, maybe out of place, but I know what the Spirit feels like and I have received that witness as strongly as many testimonies of doctrinal truths and other pieces of knowledge. And I think that's why, even though I haven't ever been part of an active chapter of JRCLS, I continue to serve and do what little part I can to aid in its growth.

This year is the 25th anniversary of the founding of the society, and as celebration we (the history committee) have been commissioned to write little articles for the JRCLS newsletter, highlighting some of its history.  I did not get assigned to write about the part I've spent many, many hours on (the initial founding) but instead to write about the addition of student chapters as part of the organizational structure.  Though it meant some stress (as the deadline for submission was during my crazy travel time and I had to do a lot of research since I knew nothing about this part), I learned several new things. I especially enjoyed reading Bill Atkin's interview and having a great phone conversation with Nancy Van Slooten.  Learned some important principles from each.

Then, at the very last minutes, I wrote my article. It's not my bestest writing, but I'm still pleased with the result (and recognize the heavenly help in getting it done).

And here is my article.

"How Student Chapters Shaped the JRCLS: Celebrating 25 Years of the Law Society"

What don't you do?! =)

Loved the article. It made me want to go out and join the chapter here (looks like it could use some participation, or at least someone to update their website!).

Meg, you should totally join it! There's a good chance just the website needs help--pretty typical of most chapters. It's hard to get enough people willing to give their time (since everyone is already super busy and have church callings on top of work and family). Not sure which chapter you're in, but I think most of the southern Cal are pretty active. Definitely look into it. :)

Carrie, glad you're back online. And thanks. And I miss you too.
