Today I went to the bank to open a new account.
The lady helping me first asked me how old I was, with the obvious intent of making sure I was old enough to open an account by myself.
My mind went blank--I think because I couldn't believe she was asking me. "Um, [long pause] tweeenty-uuuum, 29." Which probably made it sound like I was lying, but at least my driver's license backed me up.
After I answered, she said (quite frankly, I believe), "I was guessing 18."
Really? I know I was wearing jeans and a t-shirt and no make-up. But 18? It's been 11 1/2 years since I was 18. And I'm getting white hair (just pulled one out this morning). But, I'll take it. :)
Which reminds me of another thing. I have two email addresses at gmail (and a few others elsewhere) and one of them is my favorite id and one of them is my favorite id + 19. 19 is the day of the month I was born on. As well as half my siblings (different months--all the 19th). So, I like the number. But, I've had a couple of people ask me if I was 19 when I got the account. Um, no. Gmail didn't exist when I was 19. Email for the masses barely existed. I realize in 20 years that the 5 or so years of difference will be irrelevant, but right now--wouldn't you remember this? Maybe not. Or maybe they (including people who really should know I'm a little older) just think I'm 21.
When I was growing up people always guessed me years older (sometimes as many as 5 or 6) than I was. (Which I didn't understand--after all, I was just me--until I watched my cousin Ciara grow up and then I understood.) So this is quite new to me.
There was something else I wanted to say here, but I don't remember. So, check back some time and maybe I'll have added it. When my not old memory kicks back in.

I was at a District Office the other day and this hot guy asked me if I was there to enroll in high school. He was a coach at the high school.
I said looked him in the eyes and said "No. I'm an attorney for the District." I watched his draw drop way way way down.
When I get new students in my classroom, they look around and then ask me if I know where the teacher is. Yeah, I'm 29.
When I worked at a middle school (I was 22 or 23) I had several people mistake me for a student. Just last year I went to a play at the school my cousin teaches at and the lady there offered me the student price- and college students didn't get the discount. I have gray hair too but I don't pull it out. Do more grow back? Actually I think I'd have an empty patch right in front if I did that. Enjoy your young looking self!!
