This is actually the last paragraph of the post below, but not knowing if anyone would get to it, I thought I'd put it here too just in case someone wants to respond. Please.
Help! Anyone have suggestions of a nice read that doesn't include murder, rape, sex, assault, torture, or anything else heavy? At least not in detail. I mean, if I had my books I think something like Rifles for Watie would be a great time--entertaining, worth reading, but not to heavy. (And people get killed, but you know what I mean?) Or, The Goose Girl--which I was reading this time last year. Again, bad things are in it, but not too heavy for the mind and the soul. Any ideas? Any?

Hi Ruth,
Hope the studying is going well - and I completely understand the need for reading breaks. I really like Kaye Gibbons (especially "Charms for the Easy Life" and "Ellen Foster"), or you might try the other books by Shannon Hale. If you like Anne of Green Gables, you might also like "The Blue Castle" by L.M. Montgomery - it's one of my very, very favorites and has even less heaviness than Goose Girl. Hope that helps!
My favorite book is "The Wanderer" by Sharon Creech. It's more of a coming of age/self discovery book, but the mysteries aren't dark, and there's not even kissing in it (but there is juggling and pie!).
Or try "Ruby Holler" by Sharron Creech, about a kooky old couple who take in some foster kids.
Or, if you like kooky, my family loves "A Long Way from Chicago" and "A Year Down Yonder" by Richard Peck. (In fact, if you haven't read one of these, I'm going to say it's a must.)
I LOVE Mindy Starns Clark's Million Dollar Mysteries. The first one is called "A Penny for your Thoughts." I'm a BIG reader and when I picked back up (right after having Luke and moving- I was lonely) I started looking for Christian mystery or suspense books. They have morals but are still exciting. A few authors let the preaching get in the way of the story but most are really good. Join goodreads(goodreads dot com) and become my friend then I can send you all kinds of good books. You can make a "too reads" list and never have to go to the library without a good author in mind. It's AWESOME! (PS Shannon Hale's other books are good too!)
Thanks for the ideas, ladies. Laurel, I'm excited to try Kaye Gibbons. I love the Blue Castle!!
Kathryn, same. I'm going to find Sharon Creech. And Peck's midwest country books are so fabulous. have you read The Teacher's Funeral? I think it's my favorite of them all.
Cheryl-Lynn, I went and read the first one already. You're right--it's great. And, I have to tell you, even though it's been 4 (or so) years ago, the thought of you being lonely still makes me sad. :( I'll join good reads and add you, but I think I won't do it until after the bar exam. I don't do very well with temptations-book ones, at least.
