Alive and Able

On Sunday, one of my former professors died. He was an amazing man whom I respected a lot. He taught us a lot about law (I really enjoyed his class and it helped me considerably on the bar exam) and he taught us even more by his example. As he battled with ALS, he refused to give up easily. And he talked to us about what he was going through--I think that it was this, the verbal discussion combined with the example, that made the experience powerful. I don't believe one of us who had him for a class during this past couple of years will ever completely forget what we learned from him. Although he knew he was dying, he focused on the fact that he was still alive. Alive and able. And not just able to feed and dress himself, but able to change something in the world.

What am I doing today because I'm alive and able?

Here's a nice article from the NY Times.
